Challenge

Transferring knowledge to the right place

The role of academic research in the Netherlands is shifting. Once largely confined to universities—where knowledge was produced and shared primarily within academic circles—research is now increasingly expected to help address pressing societal challenges. Yet as society grows more complex, the pathways for translating this knowledge into real-world solutions are still far from fully defined.

Solution

Knowledge brokering

Introducing the Knowledge Broker. Commissioned by UNL, THRIVE conducted research to specify the profile of a knowledge broker. Knowledge brokers act as scientists, entrepreneurs, and impact-makers, able to translate between academia and societal needs.

Impact

Usable knowledge transfer

In a rapidly evolving world, knowledge brokers are emerging as key players in societal impact. By defining their role, researchers and universities can increase their impact reach.

Next steps

Training knowledge brokers

In the THRIVE PhD Academy, PhDs are trained as knowledge brokers. In collaboration with the Climate Research Initiative Netherlands (KIN), a multidisciplinary group of PhDs investigated pilots and interventions on climate neutrality and resilience—learning to translate science into societal impact along the way.
