Impact Measurement

Measuring impact can be challenging. Many organizations struggle to connect their activities and results to real societal change, especially when true impact often takes years to become visible. At the same time, stakeholders increasingly expect clear, transparent reporting in the short term. It can also be difficult to understand how much of that impact can genuinely be attributed to your organization. That’s where THRIVE comes in. We help organizations navigate this complexity. Using our proven methodology, we work alongside partners to make their impact visible, understand their contribution, and identify ways to maximize positive change.

Measuring Impact in Four Steps

Measuring impact on three levels

A full impact measurement looks at three layers: quantitative data, qualitative insights, and evidence-based validation. By integrating all three, we build a complete and nuanced picture of an organization’s impact. This approach captures measurable results, the stories and experiences behind them, and solid scientific grounding—providing a deep understanding of how impact is created in the real world.

Broad value creation in numbers
The first layer of impact measurement focuses on the measurable results connected to an organization’s intended societal impact. At this stage, THRIVE tracks key indicators related to the ecological and social themes in which the organization contributes: what we refer to as broad value creation. These values are supported by concrete data, such as the number of people reached, initiatives implemented, or projects delivered. In other words, we measure output. This layer provides a clear, data-driven picture of the organization’s measurable results and helps quantify its contribution to positive societal change.

Broad value creation in words
Impact is more than numbers. Data alone cannot fully capture the difference an organization makes. Real impact is the change that arises as a result of those measurable outputs—the effect behind the figures.

To provide a complete picture, this layer of impact measurement brings the numbers to life through stories and real-world examples. It helps reveal the depth and meaning behind broad value creation, showing not only what impact was made, but how it happened.

Rather than relying solely on traditional indicators (such as policy frameworks, SDGs, or other models), we take an open and grounded approach, examining the impact that truly emerges in practice. Each theme is supported by research and illustrated with concrete examples of the organization’s contribution, offering a rich, narrative-driven understanding of its societal impact.

Scientific proof of impact
The third layer focuses on validating impact through scientific and empirical evidence. This begins with a review of relevant literature, complemented by case studies that highlight micro-effects—specific, small-scale indications of long-term impact. These micro-evidence points help demonstrate how impact unfolds over time, offering early proof of meaningful change. Together, this method provides a rigorous and detailed understanding of an organization’s full impact, grounded in real-world evidence and academic insight.
